CHAPTER I

Anatomy and Physiology of the Renal System

NOTIONS OF ANATOMY

The urogenital system – consists of the urinary and genital systems. Most of the excretion products are eliminated through a set of organs that form the excretory apparatus.

The urinary system – is made up of the two kidneys and the urinary tract: calyces, basins, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra.

The kidneys – the secretory organs of urine, are shaped like beans and are located on either side of the lumbar spine. Each kidney, encrusted by a cellulose-adipose layer and wrapped by an inextensible fibrous capsule, is located in the renal lodge.
