Marital Instability and Student Performance in Ondo

Summary:

The research conducted by Erhunse Confidence at the College of Education, Agbor, Delta State, focuses on the impact of marital instability on the academic performance of junior secondary school students in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The study investigated the effects of stable and unstable homes on students’ academic performance, neatness, and take-home assignments. By formulating a null hypothesis and three research questions, the researcher sought to explore the differences in performance between children from broken homes and stable homes at the junior secondary school level. The research questions were: 1) Does marital instability bring about student untidiness in school? 2) Does the type of home a student comes from affect his/her academic performance in school? 3) Do students from broken homes do their assignments? The study comprised 188 randomly-selected pupils from eight schools chosen through stratified random sampling. Data was collected using documented records from the sampled schools and interviews with junior secondary teachers. The findings revealed that marital instability significantly affects students’ academic performance in the Ondo West Local Government Area, as confirmed by the analyzed school records. The research has implications for the role of stable homes in student performance and provides recommendations for mitigating the effects of marital instability on students.

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

The role of the family in the child’s education is very important since the family is where the child spends their early life. The family cycle is where many human needs and happiness can be satisfied. It is there that we may find the thing that all of us normally yearn for to feel needed to be appreciated and loved. It is important to stress that the child in the womb cannot be aided to be socialized. This is because there is no agent of socialization within the uterine atmosphere, or as such, the child’s education takes place in his interaction with the internal and external environment.
