GROUP 1 → PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
→ EXPLORING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY
– The UN defines Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.
Types of disabilities (PIPS) = Physical → Intellectual → Psychological → Sensory
● Prevalence of each group within the community 18% of the Australian population has a disability (1 in 6), or 4.4 million people
– The number of people with a disability is growing due to an increasing aged population. Due to an increase in life expectancy, the aged population is growing with more individuals with disabilities.
– Prevalence INCREASE WITH AGE; for people aged 0-65, only 11.6% of the population has a disability. For people over 65, that increase to 49.6%
– Similar statistics for both males and females at 17.8%
● Individual diversity within the group
– People with disabilities can come from any race, gender, educational or socioeconomic group.
– Some may be born with it, and others may acquire it over their lifespan.
– Permanent or temporary
– Each person is unique with their own circumstances that should be recognised.
