TYPES OF PARENTS AND CARERS
Biological Parents Biological Parents = one who contributes genetic material as a result of sexual intercourse or Assisted Reproductive Technologies. ➔ Other options for biological parents include: ◆ In vitro fertilisation (IVF) ◆ Embryo Transfer (ET) ◆ Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer (GIFT) ◆ Artificial Insemination (AI) Social Parents Social Parents = one who has parental responsibilities for a child they do not share a genetic relationship with. ➔ Can be associated with issues that have varied legal and social implications Out-of-Home Care = term used for the system where children and young people (up to the age of 18 years) are unable to live with their birth families due to a number of circumstances. ➔ Often results in adoption and fostering Adoption Adoption = the legal process where all legal rights and responsibilities are transferred from birth parents to adoptive parents. ➔ Reasons for adoption: ◆ Parents may have a low income ◆ Parents are unfit to look after a dependent due to substance abuse |
